1 Way to make it a Glad New Year!

I’ve read the laments, I’ve heard them, I’ve spoken them myself….many times.  Categorical comments about the year behind us. Hard, tough,  glad it’s over.  We take 365 individual days and put one label on them…. and more often than not it leans toward the negative.

I just returned from a trip.  3000 miles in the car.  “How was your trip?” my first go to was the 200 miles we drove in a crazy winter storm.  Less than 10% of our travel time… less than 1% or the time we were gone… that was my focus.  I lead with that? Wow.

Icy roads

Trauma and drama trump blessings and good times. Why?

Christmas Assortment

I had an amazing friend.  I really only knew her as she was dying of cancer.  For 2 years she consistently lived trauma and drama 90% of the time.  But she was one of the happiest people I knew. Why?

I have some friends…. 4 kids of their own packed into an already not so huge house.   Through a series of what appears to be unfortuate, sad, hard, dramatic and traumatic events they took on an additional 4 kids.  I sat at their table for a brief moment this Christmas and listened to this family of 10 make beautiful music. Wow!

I was looking for a particular phrase in the Bible, “Behold, look at what the Lord has done” and found Psalm 118:23 “This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.”  I love it…. this event… this trip… this hard day… this hard week.  Is it all marvelous?  All you have to do is look at the very next verse and I think you will find the key.

Psalm 118:24 “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”  How did my dying friend remain happy?  How does a packed house remain joyful? How do I get to the end of a trip or the end of 2016 and not let it be defined by the storm? Here it is… the 1 way.

  1.  REJOICE.  It would be impossible to categorically label any year bad when there had been 365 days of glad.

Did my friend have hard days?  Oh yeah… every single one of them.  Does the family of 10 have their moments…. oh yes, you can be sure of that.   But they know the secret… that the Lord made every day, every hour, every minute, every second.  They do the 1 thing… they only thing…. that will make this a “glad” new year…. Rejoice!

Chrurch at ChristmasSo, 3 days into 2016.  How are you doing with that Rejoice thing? How am I doing?  This is the day, the hour, the minute, the second, that the Lord has made…. I will rejoice and be glad.  I pray at the end of this year we will be saying “Behold, look at what the Lord has done” or even better “This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.”

Read the rest of Psalm 118 if you have a minute.    Glad New Year!

Holes in Jeans….Everyone has a Story

I’m really not sure how we got there.  We were just making small talk with the cashier at a second hand store. Cassidy, my 17 year old daughter and I had one of those co-manic moments where we both decided it would be fun to make mittens and hats from old sweaters.  We stood at the check out counter and just started chatting like we are known to do.  Each of us trying to say something cute or clever to make the cashier smile as she totaled up our treasures.  I think it went something like this:

Just a hole in a pair of jeans…
Just a hole in a pair of jeans…

Cassidy:” My dad said I needed to buy some jeans WITHOUT holes in them since it’s about to get cold”

Cashier: “Yeah, you certainly won’t need shorts… sometimes I see girls in here with shorts that have holes in them… I’d never let me daughter dress like that.”

Cassidy: “Well, my mom says my shorts have to cover at least everything a swim suit would cover….” (ok, I’m not sure I really said that, but we’ll let it slide for the sake of the story)

Cashier: “My shorts had to go below my knee when I was your age”

Me:  “Will you have your daughter dress the same way?” Cahier:  “Yes ma’am…”

(At this point I thought we might be having a great discussion about modesty…. but the conversation went another way)

“You see, I’m adopted…”  Her tone and volume dropped and she leaned over the counter a bit.  She told us her story. She told me a name and then wrote it down on a piece of paper she tore off a scrap. “This was my brother”, she said, “google his name and you’ll know the whole story”  She handed me the scrap of a scrap with a name written on it…when we got to the car we googled the name.  We read a horrific story of abuse and neglect.  A very, very sad story, one that you would never have guessed had you passed through her line and not started talking about holes in jeans. Everyone has a story.

She was one year old when her entire life took a hard left turn.  We were both a little choked up… ok, a lot choked up. “Lord, have mercy” came out of my mouth more than once as I read one of the many news articles that popped up in my Google search.

Stories take time.  Telling them. Listening to them. Googling them.  Knowing them.

The word “REDEEMED” stamped on that copper plate I bought in Sun Valley, Idaho”
The word “REDEEMED” stamped on that copper plate I bought in Sun Valley, Idaho”

One thing I love about ReJoyed is the story behind some of the metal I use.  A copper pan that I found at a garage sale in South Tampa.  Friends give me silver plated platters that have been sitting unused in storage for years. Metal treasures left over from a yard sale that would likely have been discarded by less thoughtful hands.  A bowl full of metal parts left from a project. That copper plate set I bought from a second hand store in Sun Valley, Idaho.   Every bit of it has a story.  At one time manufactured for a purpose.  It usually lands in my studio when it has become no longer useful… used up… beat up… unwanted.

That’s me, That’s you, That’s the cashier at the second hand store… created for a purpose.  Everyone has a story.  In Psalm 51:12 David asks the Lord to “Restore”  his Joy.  (By the way, this is where I get the word  “ReJoyed” from)  He may as well be saying “ReStory” me.  Take what is no longer useful… used up… beat up… unwanted and make it new.  Adopt me, if you will.  My life has taken a hard left turn.  Maybe I had control over that, maybe I didn’t… but you, Oh God,  creator AND redeemer can make ALL things completely new.

Everyone has a story.

What are you doing today?

They say, “What you do on the first day of the year is what you will do for the rest of the year.”

So, what are you doing today?

My day actually started here… hanging out with some old friends and making new ones around a campfire into the wee hours of the morning… in my world it just doesn’t get any better than that!

Campfire

After a little rest, I’m starting my morning here…

Open Bible 1

Reading these words….

Open Bible 2

Of course with this…

Morning Coffee

My plan for the rest of the day is…

Be intentional about relationships….

Get into my studio and “ReJoy” for a while….

Maybe pick up my guitar and practice for a minute or two…

Go for a walk.

So, if what they say is true…”What you do on the first day of the year is what you will do for the rest of the year”… then I’d say that 2015 is going to be a wonderful year.

So… what are you doing today?

I pray that today… and the rest of  your 2015… is filled with excellent things.

Whatever…

Four hundred and eighty-six feet above the Snake River, the Perinne Bridge near Twin Falls, Idaho,  is one of the few bridges in the country that allows base jumping.  On any given day there is surprisingly steady stream of jumpers.  On a recent visit to the bridge we watched jumper after jumper jump with a small pack attached to their back that held the difference between life and death.  Every time  someone stepped over the rail and let go I gasped,  held my breath and  didn’t take another  until the chute  was adequately filled with air and the jumper became a floater. I’m told they have just two seconds in which to pull the cord that opens their chute…  less than 5  seconds to the bottom if something goes wrong.  As I  watched with my children,  I wondered what I would do if something did go wrong.  Thankfully we never had to figure that out.

20140808_143925

Why…. why do we have such a strange fascination with things that have the potential to go terribly wrong.  Sometimes we just can’t look away.  We can’t turn our minds to something else.  I have this problem, maybe you do too. Not only can I get fixed on the base jumpers, I can get fixed on the sickness, the drama, the bad news, the brokenness, the mess.  I think we all do.

20140808_122801

A few days later I stood on that same bridge… 486 feet above the Snake River and absorbed a glorious sunset.   Breathtaking… but not in the gasping and holding breath … but an awe and wonder sort of take my breath away.    I could look at nothing else.  I was captivated.  Somehow, watching the sunset makes everything seem right in my world… even when it’s not.  The vast vista filled the entire canyon and  my mind, leaving room for nothing else… lovely!

20140807_202446

I can focus on the micro….a base jumper risking life and limb for a moment of thrill.  Gasping for breath and wondering what I will do if something goes wrong.  Or…I can focus on  the macro… a sunset, created by the creator to showcase His creation for a moment of thrill for all who pause to take it in.  Both capture my attention… one holds me hostage with fear…. The other brings a sense of peace and freedom.

WHATEVER…..

I am now several weeks into my 48th year of life…. And NO! Base Jumping is not on my bucket list.  I have very little desire to even stand on the Perinne Bridge.   But I  do conquer my fear for a  walk out on that bridge to watch the sunset.  It is a great vantage point, but I need to decide what I am going to  look at.  Will it be something that holds me hostage with fear, or something that brings peace and freedom.

20140807_204937

When I turned 48, Philippians 4:8  (4:8 for my 48th year) came to my mind.   It goes like this, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”  Did you get that?  Think about the true, honorable, just pure, lovely, commendable.   The “whatevers” don’t hold you hostage with a possibility of ending bad.  They bring peace and freedom.  Oh, they might take your breath away….  In a good way. So, for my 48th year… and beyond… I am thinking about what I’m thinking about.  If it’s not true, honorable, just, pure, lovely or commendable…. it’s micro… a small thing in the big picture…. and I turn my attention elsewhere.

20140811_204058

Yes, I have a few things in my life that will hold me hostage if I let them… it’s not like we could pretend those base jumpers just did not exist.  They do…but where is my focus?   From the vantage point I have been given I have a choice…. And I choose to focus on “Whatever”.  The true, honorable, just, pure, lovely or commendable … and I think I might just go watch the sunset tonight.

Would you like to join me?

Regarding ReJoyed… How did this all start?

A flattened wire wrapped cross

I guess the short answer is “HOPE”.

No…. not “I hope I can start a business” or “I hope people like these little pieces of metal with words stamped on them” or even “I hope I can bless someone today”. NOPE…just HOPE J.

I needed HOPE.

I had been messing around with making some wire creations for quite some time. Weaving, winding, twisting and knotting wire to make useful and some not so useful creations. Like what knitting and crocheting is for some…. Wire was for me. It is quiet therapy that kept my hands busy and my body still. My kids, my husband, my friends would watch, join in or just chat with me while I created some crazy creations. It had been a tough year… and as the Lord stilled my body He Restored my JOY.

A flattened wire wrapped cross
A flattened wire wrapped cross

One morning… I sat here… in this very chair that I sit in now… and I saw a plethora of wire creations that were overtaking my already cluttered decor…. some of them needed to find a new home.  I prayed… and felt like God was giving me the green light to open a little online store.  Maybe someone would want to buy these little wire gems.   So…  November 18, 2011 I opened an ETSY shop and called it ReJoyed.  I took the name from Psalm 51:12 … REstore to me the JOY of my salvation.

I got a few likes and favorites… but not one sale.  OK…

Then, one day I needed HOPE.  Life had taken a hard turn and I was once again trying desperately to turn my gaze back to JESUS.  A wire creation… this one a precious cross sat in front of me as I sat in the wood shop (aka garage), talking with my sweet husband.  I was trying to figure out how to put a word on that cross. I picked up a nearby hammer (one of several in his well tooled shop) and smashed the wire on the edge of that cross.  Not out of anger, or fear or anything really… but when I smashed it flat and I saw a surface.  A place that could hold a word… “Dusty… do you know where I can get some metal stamps?”

Image of "HOPE" and a cross stamped in metal
One of my original HOPE pieces with a cross

My husband… I never know what causes him to respond to my whims at some times and not at others… but this day he responded… and within a few hours I had a set of stamps and I hammered out H… O… P… E…   Not on that cross… the space was too small… but on a copper pipe that was near- by… that I hammered flat.  Turns out smashing copper pipe is good for the soul.  I then hammered out HOPE on a piece I cut from a metal tray I had purchased at a thrift shop.  I made a cross imprint and posted my little piece of HOPE on facebook… and I suddenly realized that this word in this way was powerful.  Words… pounded out on hard fought for surfaces reclaimed from the throw away pile… reclaimed… re-purposed… pieces of metal.  Words prayed over…. Deliberate words spelled out letter by letter. The entire process  was a reminder that HOPE is real… and it is stamped on my heart…. because of the cross.

The cross is the place where another Hammer hit Metal.  The cross is a place where THE WORD that “became flesh and dwelt among us” took the nail.  Wow!  Now that is HOPE!  A hard fought for HOPE!  This HOPE, His HOPE Re-claims and Re-purposes and ReJoys everything  HE touches.

So… I thought It all started with HOPE. I didn’t expect to land here…But I’m so glad I did.  So, how did ReJoyed start?   Short answer…. JESUS!  :-)

Waiting for the Light…

I woke up early this morning and sat in the dark.  I thought it might be nice to enjoy the lights on our new tree.  It’s a real tree, I could see the outline, smell the pine scent,  but no lights. We are waiting for the  lights. Apparently they are coming in the mail (thank you Amazon Prime)  later today. So, I wait.

Thanks to the Christmas zeal of a 10 year old, the ornaments are spread… well, actually they are sprawled… across the coffee table. I can’t see them because it’s dark, but I can feel them with my toes. And I know when the sun finally comes up it will expose a mess… the mess of    Christmas. The ornaments are just waiting to be hung on the tree… but first… the lights. We wait for the lights.

Christmas Ornaments2

My husband loves Christmas tree lights. At some point during the tree decorating we will hear the story. The story about when he was a poor college student, living 1442 miles from home. His family wanted him home for Christmas… he said if they promised to put all blue lights on the Christmas Tree he would get there somehow. His sister went out and spent her own money on blue lights. He hitchhiked the 1442 miles from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Buhl, Idaho.

There is something about those lights. They draw us in. They draw us to. And, they need to be on the tree before anything else. Everything comes together, eventually… but we have to wait for the lights. I hate waiting. The sprawled out ornaments feels like the mess of life. I know there is beauty here… I know it…but until the light comes it’s a mess.

Sometimes the lights come to us, via Amazon Prime shipping, and sometimes we need to do whatever we can (note to my kids: hitch hiking was ok in the 70’s but is no longer an acceptable mode of transportation) to get there.

So, we wait… and when the light gets here it will make everything beautiful. My sprawling mess will be something beautiful. Isaiah 9 says….“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone….” Walking in darkness? Living in a land of deep darkness? I’m sitting it it for sure.  That’s why I’m up in the middle of the night.  I’m looking for the light.  Something to help me make sense of the mess, the questions, the hard times…. The solution?

Light.

Isaiah goes on to name the light “… and HE shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” According to Isaiah it  is a light well worth waiting for.  The Good News is…It, or rather He .. is already here! No Amazon Prime, no hitch hiking home…. The gospel of John says it poetically …. “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” And he goes on to say… “ And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have  seen his glory,”   Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace… JESUS.  The light… Ahhh… the  Light.  No waiting.

Light first… then we can hang our sprawling mess on that tree… and He makes it beautiful.

Church Coffee

Church CoffeeI hope this makes you smile… it makes me smile.

I’ve been thinking about making this little tag for quite some time and I finally did it. I have made several I

Oh, it’s not the taste… it’s not the taste at all. It’s the experience. It’s the sound of the coffee “dripping” out of the spout. It’s the styrofoam cups… 8 ounces in the more fiscally conservative congregations… a little larger in the more progressive churches. It’s balancing a cup, a bible, a notebook and a purse while walking through a crowd. It’s listening to the buzz of the crowd as they engage in engaging yet free flowing conversations. It’s the hugs, the love, the smiles… the fellowship of kindred hearts. Not perfect.. the coffee or the people… but I l love them both.

It’s the same cup of goodness all over the country. I’ve enjoyed Church Coffee in a country church basement in Wisconsin. I small town big church in Idaho. I “cut my teeth” on Church Coffee in Minnesota. First the smell of it as a child…loved it…later the taste as we gathered in the “Fellowship Hall”. In Florida I even enjoy Church Coffee in the middle of the summer. It’s always good.

Could we have church without it? Yes we could… but it wouldn’t be the same. But maybe it’s not Church Coffee I enjoy as much as the kindred hearts that gather… not for the perfect coffee, or the perfect sermon, or the perfect music or the perfect anything….just coming together for Church… and coffee:-).

Hebrews 10:25

.”…not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

I had myself a good cup of church coffee yesterday… I hope you did too!

This Side of Christmas

December 28th…. All is Calm…. All is Cloudy…. My house still looks like a wrapping paper factory exploded. Well, not quite that bad …there are boxes and random gifts that need to find their place in my space. The kid’s nativity has taken a beating… one of the wise men is face down and off to the side.

I think about a few days after the first Christmas. The angels had winged back to their Realms of Glory, the Shepherds returned to watching their flocks… and Mary and Joseph sat somewhere, maybe still in the stable, with a baby.

This side of Christmas is where the work begins. Party over…. the “wise men” looking for the baby now had to work for it. They had to follow a star, a long ways. “Bearing gifts we traverse afar” Across fields, around fountains, through moors (a tract of open uncultivated upland; a heath) and over mountain”. But there was a baby to be found and they were determined to find him. This side of Christmas is hard work.

Nativity 1Nativity 2We sit here on this side of Christmas and reflect on the party. I wish I would have done this, or bought this gift, or not that. Or why did they do that or say that? Some are at home today licking their wounds or perhaps wounding their licks… “why did I say that?”, “that was stupid…” And beating ourselves up.

This side of Christmas is where the work begins. Party over. Now comes the hard work, the clean up, the search for the baby. The commitment to find Him…. not just go on with life as usual… but look for him. Look for him in the aftermath of the explosion of Christmas. Do whatever it takes… fields, fountains, moors mountains… follow the yonder star.
The Christmas Story as written in the book of John chapter 1 cuts right to the chase… In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it….And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Even after the party the Word made flesh and lived among us. The baby was there… a few days after Christmas the baby was still there and there to stay. The light shined in the darkness and those that worked to find him, found him.

Even in the mess. The Christmas explosion that seems to take forever to get back together. He became flesh and dwelt among us. He was found because He was a light in the darkness. He can still be found, this side of Christmas, because He is a light in the darkness. If you read John chapter 1 you will see in verse 14 the best part of all… Jesus was full of GRACE and TRUTH. Two things we desperately need when we are working hard to find him. Truth, because we need to know it… it is the Amazing Truth that sets His birth apart. And GRACE… because it is His Amazing Grace upon Grace that saves us. Grace that finds us even when we can’t seem to find Him.

This side of Christmas is hard work… but the good news that brings great JOY is still here. Jesus, is still here! Not physically, but His Words, His powerful Words that are full of Truth and Grace are still here. Read the entire book of John… and see how those that looked for Him found Him. He is a light shining in the darkness and living among us. Read the powerful story of His life… maybe even in one sitting. It’s really the beginning of the story of life on this side of Christmas. Of regular people just like you and me looking for Jesus and trying to figure out what to do with Him on this side of Christmas. Jesus, full of Grace and Truth, lived among us… this side of Christmas.

So, this side of Christmas is OK… because of Christmas this calm, cloudy, wrapping paper factory explosion is OK. Party over…. the hard work begins… but the Word became flesh and living among us is still here to find. Full of Truth and Grace… a light shining in the darkness. Merry this side of Christmas!

“O Holy Night”

O Holy Night… every time I hear this sweet Christmas Carol, I stop and listen… I NEVER tire of the rich words.  The lines “Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth” have me thinking.

Genesis 3
Chapter 3 Page 3 “the Fall”

As I look at the book of Genesis I realize that it isn’t but a few pages into the story, three  to be exact, in chapter 3 that “The Fall” happens. The next several thousand years are represented in one line of this song, “Long lay the world in sin and error pining”.  Pining, according to my Websters New Collegiate Dictionary 1977 edition,  means to lose vigor, health or flesh, to languish or yearn intensely and persistently for something unattainable. But then, on that O so Holy Night He (Jesus) appeared and our souls suddenly felt their worth. Are you yearning intensely and persistently for something unattainable?

Pine: To yearn intensely and persistently especially for something unattainable
Pine: To yearn intensely and persistently especially for something unattainable

O Holy Night.  Jesus appeared to give worth to our souls. Until then it was up to the flesh to perfectly obey the law. The Old Testament is filled with stories of people that pined away in sin and error… some had less sin and error, some had more, all failed, most failed miserably at one time or another.  Not much has changed in the flesh department has it?  However, the soul is a different story!  The soul felt its worth.  Back up to the line that says “It is the night of our Dear SAVIORS birth”!  The SAVIOR… the one thing that was unattainable for man is completely attainable for God… to save the soul!  Now that’s feeling worth, or better yet, feeling worthy!  Not because of the value we have, but the value He gives us. Not because of anything we did but because of everything God did.  He so Loved the world that He gave His only Son… so whoever BELIEVES in Him will be Saved. O HOLY NIGHT!

I hope you can take a moment today, or tomorrow, to pause….   and listen …. to the powerful words of this beautiful song.

O Holy Night

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices

O night when Christ was born
O night divine!
O night, O night divine!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains He shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in His name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name
Christ is the Lord!
Their name forever praise we

Noel, Noel
O night, O night divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O night divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O holy night

The Power of a Word

This word is all over "The Word" one place I found it is in Colossians 3:15
This word is all over “The Word” one place I found it is in Colossians 3:15

I admire words. I pay attention to words. Words said. Words not said. Words written. Words not written. Those that know me know I am not a “Wordsmith”. I do not finely hone sentences to a sharp and penetrating point. I often wander with my words, both spoken and written. But I admire a good, concise, well crafted, well placed word or two or three when I read or hear them.

HOPE is such a great word! Hebrews 6:19
HOPE is such a great word! Hebrews 6:19

Words are powerful….I think that’s why I love to do what I do with “ReJoyed”. When dozens upon hundreds of them are put together in a song or a book they are meaningful. But when one word or phrase is pulled from the meaningful it is powerful. A powerful reminder. When that one word comes from “The Word” there is infinite power and meaning behind it

Never forget this word!
Never forget this word!

I sometimes ask people to give me a word. What is one word that I be praying for you? One word. The answers come back…. after some thought. One word answers that are complete sentences none the less. Hope. Peace. Joy. Patience. Perseverance. Wisdom. Love. Behind each word is a story, sometimes an epic novel…but often the focus, the need, the prayer is one word.

A powerful word from John 15
A powerful word from John 15

In the few months that I have been pounding words into metal I have had the honor of hearing many stories about the power of a word.. Some come from people I know, some I haven’t met yet. They will tell me why this word or short little phrase is so particularly powerful to them. What a blessing! Keep sharing your stories with me… I promise I won’t publish them unless you give me permission to do so… but I love hearing them!

Joy is the word I asked some friends to pray for me a few years ago....ReJoyed began as a result of my Joy being Restored! :-)
Joy is the word I asked some friends to pray for me a few years ago….ReJoyed began as a result of my Joy being Restored! 🙂

So, what’s your word? It doesn’t have to be stamped into metal. Write it down. Study it out. Open “The Word” and look for your word. What does God have to say about Hope, Peace, Joy, Patience, Perseverance, Wisdom or Love? Ask a friend to pray that word for you. I think you will be amazed by the power of a word in The Word.
